What is it? The basic concept of Laser Therapy is the transmission and absorption of light ENERGY into cells and tissues of the body causing biological effects (known as Photobiomodulation). This stimulates a positive physiological response, producing more rapid healing of tissues, including nerves, muscles, bones, tendons and skin, while also providing pain relief.
- The major benefits of Therapeutic laser are
- Pain relief (chronic and back pain, post-surgical and acute pain, neuropathic pain)
- Inflammation reduction
- Immunomodulation (stimulate immune response)
- Promotion of wound healing
- Tissue regeneration
Laser therapy has many uses in veterinary medicine. It is safe, well tolerated, and sessions are quick, with most only lasting up to 5-10 minutes. Laser acupuncture is often performed during routine acupuncture sessions. The laser is used instead of a needle to stimulate acupuncture points on the body. This can be particularly useful over sensitive areas where a needle may not be appreciated.
*Patients and anyone present in the treatment room must wear protective eye shields (goggles or ‘doggles’ for the kitties and dogs). This makes for adorable photos, too!
